If you love cherries and chocolate, you’ll LOVE these black forest overnight oats! Made with fresh or frozen cherries, it’s a nourishing dessert-inspired breakfast perfect for busy mornings that will actually fill you up, with 20g of protein and 13g of fiber per serve!

One of the things I love most about developing plant-based recipes for you is that it’s kind of like us sharing a meal. Because everything I create here is something I actually eat…like, I’m not just doing it for the ‘gram, you know?
I develop the kinds of recipes I crave, that deliver the nutrition I need (I am a dietitian after all…and I don’t think that nourishing recipes and craveable recipes are mutually exclusive). I make it here in my kitchen. And share it with you to make in your kitchen. It connects us, no matter where you live, which is really freaking cool.
So these black forest overnight oats are born of a few desires. One, my undying love of black forest cake, and chocolate cherry everything. Two, my utter laziness in the morning…and delight in having breakfast waiting for me in the fridge when I wake up.
But/and/also…because I’m vegan and over 40, I’m watching my protein intake. And these black forest overnight oats pack in 20 grams of protein with zero protein powder or Greek yogurt. But even more importantly, they’ve got 13 grams of fibre plus healthy fats…because the combo of fats, fibre and protein is the gold standard in feeling full and satisfied and keeping blood sugars and energy levels on an even keel.
It really doesn’t get any simpler: mix it up, pop it in the fridge and enjoy. I’ve been alternating this new flavour with my carrot cake overnight oats – which is a totally different vibe! – because even though I want to simplify breakfast, I need a little variety in my life, you know?

Making these yummy black forest overnight oats? Here’s what you need to know…
If you’ve tried my black forest smoothie, you’ll know that the secret to making this taste like actual black forest cake and not just chocolate and cherries is the almond extract. If you skip it, it will be delicious, but a little less authentic!

Got a bigger appetite? You can increase the oats to ½ cup and add ¼ cup more milk. You’ll need a big jar as the recipe as written fills up a pint jar already!
